Last month I shared how I started saving money by switching to the Walmart Family Mobile Plan . Since that time I’ve temporarily moved back home and I’m making every second of this time count. It’s especially nice to be here for Mother’s Day since for the past 2 years I have missed it. My family may be crazy but I would be lost without my mom and grandmother.
There are so many memories just waiting to be made and captured. Family meals, barbecues, weddings, and birthdays. There’s so much happening during this time! A couple of weeks ago was the first concert of the season for us – Lunatic Luau. Bands like Godsmack, Slayer, Papa Roach and more were rocking and while the memories may fade but a picture is worth a thousand words.
This Mother’s Day I have something pretty special planned for my mom. See, she is
obsessed with a huge Kid Rock fan. It’s been her dream to see him in concert for a long time and I’m finally going to make that happen. I have the presentation all ready too – complete with a sweet new phone to replace her outdated flip phone. Yes, my mom is still using a flip phone.
You see, I’m a bit of a phone junkie. My mom, however, uses her cell as little as possible. She has complained about her bill for years now, so switching her to Walmart Family Mobile will be part of the surprise.
The Walmart Family Mobile service is $29.88/month(for the first line) Unlimited Talk, Text & Data service plan which includes up to 1G of 4G LTE data.
So here’s how my mom’s Mother’s Day is going to go.
We’ll do breakfast, she’ll probably cook since she’s stubborn. I’ll hand over her new Zinger ZTE phone and tell her about the Walmart Family Mobile service and how much she’ll be saving on her monthly cell phone bill. She’ll smile and say thank you. I’ll offer to show her how to use the basic features and get her to turn the screen on.
… I’ve already set the phone up and when she turns on the screen she’ll see this:
Our tickets to the upcoming Kid Rock concert in July. Since the Walmart Family Mobile Plan includes unlimited texting she’ll never have to worry about me bombarding her with texts again.
This will probably make her cry but I’m okay with that since they’ll be tears of joy.
Once the excitement dies down from the surprise I’ll make sue she knows how to use her camera since we’re going to want to capture as many memories as possible while we’re there!!
Do you have a special surprise for Mom this Mother’s Day?

I have never been overly frugal; I have tried my hand at couponing (mostly for fun) and consider myself a price savvy shopper for the most part. Saving money on everything was never at the top of my list until recently. The truth is I have always had some other income aside from my own to depend on, or at least bail me out when needed. Now that I am officially doing it on my own I’ve had to learn a few things about saving money. It’s been interesting, if not fun, adjusting my lifestyle to fit my budget. Not everything I’ve tried has panned out, but here are a few things that have made a huge difference.
One of the first things I learned was don’t overpay. This is a biggie – especially when talking about things like cell service. I was paying around $60 a month for standard service. I was able to cut that in half ($29.88 for the first line ) by switching to a Walmart Family Mobile plan. Now I get unlimited talk, text, and data with up to 500MB of 4G LTE data for around $30 a month.
While I was at Walmart I found the Alcatel OneTouch Evolve 2 which was a huge step up from my rinky-dink phone that came before it. I was shocked that the Alcatel OneTouch Evolve 2, the plan, and starter kit cost less than some of my previous cell bills alone.

Something else I learned was to cut out anything that wasn’t absolutely necessary. For me one of the first things I got rid of was cable. Paying $50+ a month for a service I hardly used seemed pretty crazy. Especially when I can pay less than $8 a month and watch unlimited movies and TV shows.
I was even more excited when I realized I can watch movies on my new phone! By connecting to my home network I am able to save my data use for when I’m out and about and still watch whatever I want wherever I am. When I’m out the 4G speed lets me watch movies continuously – without the intermittent pauses for buffering. SCORE!
It’s also nice that the dogs can watch their favorite YouTube doggy stars on the phone too!
Putting a limit on eating out has been a huge money saver for me as well. When I’m out, especially in the car passing restaurants, I want to eat. I’ve learned that keeping snacks on hand helps curb the urge to pull up to a drive-thru. Granola bars, sliced fruits and veggies, and single serving snacks are filling and a lot healthier than most fast food options.
So what did I to do with all the money I’m saving with my new frugal lifestyle? Well, most of it is going into savings while a small portion went to my St. Patrick’s Day festivities. March is the month of green after all and I’m loving how much of it I have left now!
