Can you think of a time when you bought/paid for something and didn’t get the amount you paid for? Like, I have ever paid for an extra-large drink only to get 1/4 of it? It sounds ridiculous, right? So why do we pay for more internet than we get?
When we moved to Iowa last month the internet speeds went WAY up. We went from 75 Mbps download to 150 Mbps download and the monthly cost wasn’t much different. Imagine our disappointment when the speed test showed we were getting a whopping 15 Mbps download with a dial-up worthy upload speed. Needless to say, we were on the phone finding out why in the world the speeds were so different from those we were paying for. It came down to one thing: THE MODEM.
I never realized how different an internet connection was between modems. If you are one of the many who rent their modem from the cable company this post is for you. If you have problems with your internet going in and out, if you can make and drink a pot of coffee before a file downloads then this post is for you too. You need an awesome modem.
Arris sent the SURFboard SB6190 Cable Modem for review purposes
The SURFboard SB6190 Cable Modem is the answer to many problems. Sick of wasting money every month renting a modem from the cable company? Not getting the full benefits of your internet/WiFi connection? A top of the line modem like this one is exactly what the tech gods call for.
What’s so special about the SURFboard SB6190 Cable Modem
First off, this modem has a huge downstream speed of up to 1.4 Gbps. That’s right, not Mbps, but Gbps. This is especially important if you have a high-speed package but don’t see the high-speed numbers.
The modem works with popular cable providers like Comcast, Charter, Time Warner, and Cox. It’s super easy to install the modem and you can expect to be surfing at the speeds you pay for within 15 minutes*!
*You may need to contact your cable company to get them to add/provision the modem for your account.
The only thing this modem doesn’t give you is WiFi and you have routers to take care of that. you can see for yourself what the Arris SURFboard Cable Modem SB6190 has to offer.
I swear, I never realized MMORPG gameplay could be so smooth and seamless! No more frozen screens or crazy lag spikes. I can turn my graphics up and the game doesn’t take forever to render. This is all since installing this modem!
When you’re expecting a baby, whether it’s your first or fourteenth, you want to have all of the essentials before their arrival. This is where the fun starts because everyone will list a ton of things you absolutely need. Right now I’m only going to tell you about one – the VTech DM222 Safe & Sound Digital Baby Monitor.
I received the VTech Safe & Sound Baby Monitor for review purposes and want to tell you more about it and what I think. Let’s jump in!
At first sight, this is your standard baby monitor. You have your receiver and transmitter, both with AC adapters. The transmitter/baby unit needs to remain plugged in while the receiver/parent unit has a rechargeable battery. The parent unit has an operational range of up to 1,000 feet outdoors or indoors.
VTech Safe & Sound Baby Monitor Parent Unit
The parent unit has a belt clip that lets you carry on with your daily tasks and still have your baby within earshot. There is a 2-way talk-back intercom feature on the parent unit that lets you vocally soothe your baby without interrupting any sleep training.
If for any reason you need to mute the parent unit, there is a 5-level sound indicator that shows the sound level in your baby’s room. For added measure, the unit will vibrate when sound is picked up in the baby’s room.
The parent unit allows you to set several features, including sound sensitivity, from the menu.
VTech Safe & Sound Baby Monitor Baby Unit
The baby unit uses DECT 6.0 technology, meaning you can go further and not encounter the annoying white noise that analog monitors put out. This also keeps transmissions secure and interference-free – so no eavesdropping neighbors.
Going above your standard baby monitor, the baby unit has a built in night light that projects a colorful solar system on the ceiling. The scene changes to show more and less so there is a steady flow of vibrant planets, stars, and moon.
The scenery change is subtle which I really like; I think rapid changes would be too distracting.
The baby unit plays a soothing lullaby, with the ability to increase and decrease the sound. You can choose between just playing the lullaby, just projecting the astronomy scene, or having them both in unison.
The baby unit sits on a magnetic base, allowing you to swivel and adjust the projection to best suit baby. There is also a page feature on the unit in case you lose/misplace the parent unit.
VTech DM222 Safe & Sound Baby Monitor Bottom Line
Priced under $50 (on most sites), this feature packed baby monitor will suit most needs. The fact that it is made by VTech adds a lot of value to the unit. You can buy the VTech Safe & Sound Baby Monitor from any of the following retailers:

How many times have you looked at your insurance policy and shook your head? You hardly ever use the car yet you’re paying out the wahoo for a ‘Oh no!’ moment that will likely never happen. But there’s no other choice, right?
Metromile is a pay-per-mile insurance that only charges you for, you guessed it, how many miles you drive. If you drive less than 10,000 miles per year you could save hundreds on your car insurance using a pay-per-mile insurance carrier like Metromile.
The average Metromile customer saves $500 when they switch!
Metromile offers all the key levels of protection that the big auto insurance companies do, including:
Metromile also gives you a more informed driving experience which can help you save time and money. Using data gathered from Metromile Pulse, (an OBD-II device that plugs into your car’s computer system), you’ll only pay a few cents per mile and have a low monthly base rate for full coverage! Features include:
Car health information (diagnostic trouble codes)
Customizable trip logs
Mileage tracking for expense reporting
If you’re not in an area where pay-per-mile insurance is available you can still test drive Metromile with their free beta app. When you sign up you receive the Metromile Tag, a small device that wirelessly connects with your phone via iBeacon technology and delivers many of the valuable insights that per-mile insurance customers enjoy.
With the Metromile Tag you’ll get the same driving details as with the Pulse. You’ll have your car’s health information, location, trip logs, mileage tracking, and driving trends right at your fingertips. My favorite thing about the Tag is there’s no installation. You can keep it in the cup holder, glove compartment, your pocket, or anywhere in your car. As long as your phone is on (with Bluetooth enabled) everything is tracked.
To help you get motivated we’re giving away a Metromile swag bag to one lucky reader. The bag includes the following items:

I have never been overly frugal; I have tried my hand at couponing (mostly for fun) and consider myself a price savvy shopper for the most part. Saving money on everything was never at the top of my list until recently. The truth is I have always had some other income aside from my own to depend on, or at least bail me out when needed. Now that I am officially doing it on my own I’ve had to learn a few things about saving money. It’s been interesting, if not fun, adjusting my lifestyle to fit my budget. Not everything I’ve tried has panned out, but here are a few things that have made a huge difference.
One of the first things I learned was don’t overpay. This is a biggie – especially when talking about things like cell service. I was paying around $60 a month for standard service. I was able to cut that in half ($29.88 for the first line ) by switching to a Walmart Family Mobile plan. Now I get unlimited talk, text, and data with up to 500MB of 4G LTE data for around $30 a month.
While I was at Walmart I found the Alcatel OneTouch Evolve 2 which was a huge step up from my rinky-dink phone that came before it. I was shocked that the Alcatel OneTouch Evolve 2, the plan, and starter kit cost less than some of my previous cell bills alone.

Something else I learned was to cut out anything that wasn’t absolutely necessary. For me one of the first things I got rid of was cable. Paying $50+ a month for a service I hardly used seemed pretty crazy. Especially when I can pay less than $8 a month and watch unlimited movies and TV shows.
I was even more excited when I realized I can watch movies on my new phone! By connecting to my home network I am able to save my data use for when I’m out and about and still watch whatever I want wherever I am. When I’m out the 4G speed lets me watch movies continuously – without the intermittent pauses for buffering. SCORE!
It’s also nice that the dogs can watch their favorite YouTube doggy stars on the phone too!
Putting a limit on eating out has been a huge money saver for me as well. When I’m out, especially in the car passing restaurants, I want to eat. I’ve learned that keeping snacks on hand helps curb the urge to pull up to a drive-thru. Granola bars, sliced fruits and veggies, and single serving snacks are filling and a lot healthier than most fast food options.
So what did I to do with all the money I’m saving with my new frugal lifestyle? Well, most of it is going into savings while a small portion went to my St. Patrick’s Day festivities. March is the month of green after all and I’m loving how much of it I have left now!
