When I was younger I laughed when anyone said they had heartburn. It seemed like a ridiculous concept and just couldn’t wrap my head around it. Fast forward to my mid twenties and I finally understood what the big deal was.
Heartburn is the worst!
I got to the point where I couldn’t even look at spicy food without that familiar burning sensation coming over me. When my gallbladder came out I assumed that was the end of my heartburn and had to test the theory. The first time I ate spicy food things were fine for the first hour afterwards. Then it hit me. The sour taste in the back of my throat and the burning sensation in my chest. My problems weren’t over and I was so sick of feasting on antacids. It was time for a change and I knew there had to be a simpler solution.

I might be showing my age here but those Shake and Bake commercials from my childhood were just the cutest thing. “It’s Shake and Bake, (in a deep country accent) and I helped” was simply adorable! I’m sure that has something to do with why I love Shake and Bake today, I just don’t love the price or not having control over the ingredients. That’s why I started making my own and I love that I can customize each batch so there’s never a dull meal.
It couldn’t be easier to mix up your own homemade shake and bake mix at home for a fraction of the price you’ll pay in a store. Here is my basic recipe and a few alterations you can try. Feel free to play around with the ingredients and measurements to suit your tastes.
You might be tempted to omit the vegetable oil from the recipe, but don’t. Believe it or not it’s actually pretty important to helping the mixture stick to meats (or veggies) and maybe even enhances the flavor. I just know I’ve tried it without the oil and it’s nowhere near as good.

When I add spice to my homemade shake and bake the taste is amazing, but the sour stomach and heartburn aren’t. That’s why I stuck with Nexium 24HR long after the 30 day challenge ended.
