There are so many different types of effective workouts out there, and sometimes it’s hard to choose the type of workout that suit our bodies best.

I’ve personally tried numerous different workouts and about 2 years ago, I stumbled upon high intensity interval training — or HIIT for short. Two years ago, I had the absolute worst cardio endurance. I couldn’t even run for 1 minute straight without stopping. I decided to try a HIIT workout and ever since, I fell in love with how quick my endurance began to improve after incorporating HIIT into my weekly workout regime.

Two years later, I’m more toned with less % body fat and with a much higher level of cardio fitness. I decided to do some research on HIIT and its effects on the human body (which is so fascinating to me especially since I’m pursuing a degree in Exercise Science!). As much as I love moving from state to state, city to city, I hate the actual moving process. Mainly the packing part. This latest adventure is taking me to … drumroll, pleaseMarion, Iowa.

You probably thought I was going somewhere awesome like New York, or Los Angeles. Instead, it’s someplace you have probably never heard of. That’s what makes this exciting for me; at least, that’s what I’m telling myself.

Our move in date is April 1st and I’m still gathering the packing supplies. I have less than 20 days to get the apartment packed up while still being able to live comfortably while we wait.

This means I spend most of my days sitting on the floor surrounded by unsurpassable mounds of knick-knacks, whatchamacallits, and whosawhatsis. Sorting through what goes and what stays. Forcibly reminding myself to label each box so when the toilet paper runs out we know where to get more.

With my time being devoted to packing and cleaning I don’t have a ton of time to do much else. That includes cooking. See, the way I figure it since it’s just the two of us we can survive the next few weeks on sandwiches and takeout. This way we don’t have to worry about a ton of dishes or wasting time in the kitchen.

Healthier Choices & Changes #StartSmart2016

Every year I impulsively resolve to lose weight, get healthier, and/or make some other radical change. Every year, by June, I have either forgotten or dismissed those resolutions.

This year I’m trying something a little different to #StartSmart2016. Instead of setting a goal of 20 pounds or 20 miles I decided to start making more health conscious decisions. I figure every time I have set a specific goal for myself I get overwhelmed, this way there’s no timeline and no way to really fail. It was all a matter of finding what needed to change and deciding how to change it.


I took a look at my life from the outside; I tracked what I was eating and my physical activity for a week to get an idea of where I needed to make changes. I will admit I was a little scared when I looked back at the week. I was eating pretty decently during the day/evening, but when nighttime came I started in on the junk. I also noticed a severe lack of activity. Outside of my cleaning routine and store runs I was spending most of my time sitting down.

My lack of activity and midnight junk food binges were a major concern for me. No way was any of this healthy and I realized just how much I needed to make a change.

The first change I made was the food I bought. I considered cutting out everything that wasn’t 100% healthy but quickly realized that wasn’t going to stop me. Being a strong-willed, determined woman with a convenience store less than 2 miles away meant cheating was easy and expensive. Instead, I chose to pick up snack alternatives that were healthier than what I would normally choose. Here are some of the alternatives (and a cheat sheet for you to print out):


  • Instead of potato chips I bought whole wheat tortillas. I cut them into wedges and bake for 15 minutes (at 350F). They are perfect for dipping and are a healthier alternative to potato chips.
  • Instead of candy, I bought fresh fruits. They satisfy my sweet tooth without being unhealthy. I love slicing up a banana and baking it (at 300F) for 10 minutes. They are crunchy, yummy, and amazing with peanut butter!
  • Instead of ice cream I bought frozen yogurt. I also started freezing fruit (like bananas on a stick dipped in chocolate) for a quick, healthier snack.
  • Instead of soda I bought juice and milk. This might be the hardest change I made; I’m so used to picking up a 20 oz. in the checkout line that I have to watch myself when I’m shopping.

Since soda is one of my biggest vices I had to find something that worked for me in order to stay away from it. I have always loved juice so Simply Orange is a great alternative for soda.
