Now that the weather is warming up those common household pests are coming full force. Most commercial products designed to keep pests away are full of chemicals or are just insanely inhumane. These 7 pest control remedies will protect your home from unwanted

When you’re entertaining outdoors white vinegar is your best friend. Fill a spray bottle or wet a towel with undiluted white vinegar and wipe down your surfaces. Bugs won’t dare cross thus keeping you and your guests pest free.
Many essential oils work miracles against pests. Peppermint oil will keep mice away, just dip a cotton ball into the oil and place near any nooks and crannies that could be entry points. Citronella works incredibly well for keeping outside bugs (gnats, mosquitoes, flies etc.. away.)

Dump the Water
Mosquito’s lay their eggs on water, so making sure any receptacle that could collect water is empty will keep them from hatching near you.
Jam & Jelly
If you have flowers then you most likely have bees buzzing around too. Keep a dish of jam or jelly in a specific area away from where you and/or your family will be.
Instead of tossing your lemon, lime, and orange peels, consider keeping them. They are great for keeping bugs away. Wipe down surfaces and yourself with the citrus peels and bugs will not come near you.
Use cinnamon sticks in areas where you’ve seen ants. They’ll crawl away from them and leave your home in peace. You can also use cloves and peeled garlic to do the trick.
I love the smell of mint and when planted around the house it will keep ants from entering.
These are some of my favorite ways to keep pests away, what are yours?
Have you ever been so busy that you spaced on the shopping list and forgot 1 or more things? I do it all of the time and by the time I realize it I don’t feel like going back to the store. This usually leads to at least one of the following:
- Running out of conditioner (because the shampoo always lasts at least twice as long) and having blah hair.
- Running out of dish detergent (because the dishwasher is busted) and having a sink full of dishes.
- Running out of laundry detergent and having to re-wear last weeks jeans… twice.
- Running out of hand soap/toilet paper and having guests show up unexpectedly… every darn time.

Store bought air fresheners may smell great but they’re not very cost-effective or environment friendly. Instead of shopping to find ways to make my house smell great I choose to make my own home air fresheners. One of my absolute favorite infusions is orange with clove. It’s bold and crisp and just sets me up to have a great day! There are so many infusion possibilities, but this compilation is of my top 10 favorites.
What’s really great about these DIY Home Air Freshener recipes is that they use stuff found in most homes already. It’s also nice that spices can be mixed and matched to make your own signature aroma. Just because the orange & clove simmer is my favorite doesn’t mean it will be yours. Feel free to add and subtract as you see fit.
Here’s how to make DIY Home Air Freshener
You’ll be making all of these infusions the same, so I’m just using the orange and clove as a base example. Scroll down to see even more great infusion ideas.
First things first, you need something to cook in. This can be a small, old saucepan, a small simmer pot or an old potpourri warmer. Whatever you can scrounge up, no need to go out and buy something just for this.
Now let’s gather the ingredients for our DIY home air freshener. To make the orange & clove simmer we’ll need 3 – 5 oranges, about 1 tablespoon of cloves (whole or ground – up to you) and 1/2 cup of water to start with.
First peel the oranges, eating or reserving the fruit. Then carefully bend and ply the peels to get those juices flowing.
*We don’t want them spraying everywhere, just loosening them up.
Drop them into a small saucepan. Sprinkle the cloves on top and cover with the water.
Set the heat to medium and wait for the aroma to start filling the room. Once you can smell the orange and clove infusion it’s time to
a.) reduce the heat to low and allow to simmer
– or –
b.) transfer the mixture to another vessel like a simmer pot or potpourri warmer
Whichever method you choose be sure to keep the water level at least 1/4 inch – we don’t want to burn the ingredients or the pot!
Now here are 9 more aroma infusions for you to try!
- 4 Strawberries (sliced) + 1 Banana peel + 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
- 2 Cinnamon sticks + 1 teaspoon vanilla + 1 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon + 1 Bay Leaf + 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
- 2 lemon peels + 1 teaspoon vanilla + 1 orange peel
- 1 Bay Leaf + 1 teaspoon peppermint extract
- 2 lemon peels + 2 teaspoons raspberry extract
- 6 apple slices + 1 teaspoon vanilla + 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- Leftover pineapple + 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 4 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice + 2 lemon peels
What is your favorite aroma infusion for the home?
If you have had any kind of surgery then you know the struggle of post-anesthesia coughing. It’s one of the worst parts of surgery in my opinion and it can be very scary. The fear (and pain) is especially present with surgery involving the torso, where coughing puts strain on the incision site. The slightest post-op throat tickle incites terror in me. My biggest fear is pulling a stitch/staple and opening the incision followed by the thought of getting pneumonia. Definitely not fun.
One of the first things you’re taught after surgery is how to splint your cough. This is firmly (but gently) pulling a pillow onto the incision area before coughing in order to prevent excessive pain or opening your incision. It’s not the most pleasant feeling in the world but it sure beats the alternative; coughing without splinting hurts far worse.
Before my emergency surgery I received a pillow from Essentia Mattress to test out (sent for review purposes). I’m a pillow hoarder so of course I was stoked to get another. I had a few days to test drive the all-natural memory foam pillow at home. It didn’t take me but maybe 4 minutes to actually fall in love with the pillow. As soon as I opened the box and pulled it out I was smitten. The weight alone put a smile on my face – I like my pillows a little on the heavy side. This comes in handy when I have a headache (I put pillows on my head and apply pressure to relieve headaches… don’t judge me!)
What really sold me on this pillow though was how awesome it was while I was in the hospital.
When I came to after the surgery my mom was by my side and asked what I wanted from home. Unlike a planned surgery, emergency surgery usually leaves you with just the gown on your back while you’re admitted. I asked for my phone charger, my laptop, and my pillow. I’m a simple girl 🙂 She came back with everything and suddenly being stuck in the hospital wasn’t so bad. I seriously had everything I needed to make the next few days bearable.
The pillow served dual purposes. Not only did it help me sleep comfortably, it was perfect for splinting my coughing. The weight and density were perfect and alleviated so much pain. I tried with the hospital pillows and they just didn’t cut it. The best part was the different nurses coming in to feel the pillow, asking where it came from. They were shocked when I told them it was made from all-natural memory foam; they didn’t realize that was possible.
In fact, not many people realize this is possible which would explain why Essentia Mattress is the only company in the world to offer Natural Memory Foam. That may not seem like a huge deal on the surface, but it really is. For starters, traditional memory foam can contain harmful VOC’s and carry a foul chemical odor.
Another added bonus was the fabric that encased the pillow. It is neutral in color, making it ideal from male and females. The simple striped pattern makes it attractive but not too busy. Even better it is made with unbleached organic cotton that is durable and breathable. The case zips and unzips, making cleaning it a breeze.
I’m still loving the pillow and carry it around like Linus with his blanket. It’s just the right amount of thickness for me to sleep like a baby and not have to continuously ‘fluff’ it up. The memory foam is incredible and being a pillow picker (I wiggle my fingers around incessantly) love the way it feels. To say I’m happy with my new Essentia Pillow would be an understatement! I think the only thing better would be one of Essentia’s natural memory foam mattresses!
Here are a few fast facts about the world’s only natural foam mattress:
- Essentia has patents – unique to Essentia is their natural memory foam, the only one of it’s kind in the world.
- Full Transparency…like a food label – Essentia shares the ingredients used to make their foam and the VOC report so you can be sure it’s healthy.
- The most recommended bed in America, BUT NATURAL – all other memory foam mattresses are made from petroleum-based chemicals.
- No animals were harmed in the making of this mattress – many industry-leading mattresses use a ton of animal bi-products. Essentia does not!
- Essentia offers a mattress for every budget, starting at $1790 for a queen. Around a 20 years lifespan – probably outlasting any other important purchase like a car!
Whether you’re in the market for an amazing pillow or an eco-friendly mattress Essentia has you covered. Check out their website and connect with them on social media:
Take a look at the ingredients list on your laundry detergent. Some of the ingredients may have toxic effects on your body. Some common ingredients in many commercial laundry detergents can cause:
- Respiratory problems
- Eye irritation
- Endocrine system disruption
If you see any of the following ingredients on the label, run!
- Sodium lauryl sulfate
- sodium laureth sulfate
- nonylphenol ethoxylate
It’s so easy to avoid this situation and risk by using an organic laundry detergent. I know, if you’re anything like Scott you’ll say “why would I pay more for organic when I can get “X” brand for “X” price. Let’s see why, shall we?
Roux Maison laundry detergent contains 4 ingredients on their label. 4. Take a look at what they don’t have and what they don’t do .
You can see it’s free of SLS, SLES, Pthalate and so many other known toxins found in other laundry detergents. To me this is what it’s all about. Knowing that those nasty chemicals aren’t going to be going onto or into my family’s skin.
Peace of mind, laundry that smells fantastic and eco bonus points are just a few bonuses you get from Roux Maison. Clothes actually feel and smell clean. That’s what laundry detergent is supposed to do, but there’s just something about this laundry detergent that makes it even better. Like the feeling that you know you’re doing something positive for your family as well as the environment.
I can definitely recommend Roux Maison as a replacement for your normal laundry detergent. Just give it a try, $14.99 for a 16 ounce bottle (which gives you 40+ loads of clean laundry) is a small price to pay to protect yourself and your family. Roux Maison offers 3 varieties in their Essential Detergents line:
- Sweet Tea
- and Fragrance Free
But that’s not all! Be sure to check out everything Roux Maison has to offer by visiting their website, you won’t be disappointed. Be sure to connect with Roux Maison on Facebook and Twitter as well.
