9 Fall Accessories You Never Knew You Needed | www.simplebeautifullife.net

Although we still have plenty of summer days left ahead of us, we can’t deny that in just a few weeks, our nights will get colder as we ease into the fall season. A lot of the time, the weather can get a bit confusing, and accessorizing is a whole other dilemma. Do we wear scarves or sandals? When do we wear boots? Well, I came up with a few accessories that’ll make it a lot easier for you guys to get ready in the mornings as we enter the fall season. These accessories will have you walking out of the house (or your dorms) feeling all dolled up with minimal effort.

When it comes to makeup most people think of the product itself before anything else. What isn’t always given much thought is the brushes you use to apply your makeup. I used to be under the impression that ‘a brush is a brush’ but that couldn’t be less true.

See, not all makeup brushes are created equal and once you use top-of-the-line brushes you’ll never go back to the cheap, shedding brushes you may be used to.

artis brushes

I was recently given the chance to try (for review purposes) a few brushes from the Artis Fluenta collection. The first thing that stood out about these brushes is that they are animal-free. Most makeup brushes on the market use goat hair, but Artis does not.

Artis never uses any animal hairs or by-products in their brushes! They use CosmeFibreâ, trademarked engineered fiber developed exclusively for superior makeup application. This fiber outperforms animal hair by resisting UV, chemical challenges, and wear testing for more consistent application than animal hair used in conventional makeup brushes.

The brushes in the Artis Fluenta collection do not look like your typical makeup brushes. They are handmade (in the USA) to make applying makeup easier and more efficient – without you needing to bend and contort your wrists and hands to get it just right. Artis founder, Matthew Waitesmith {former MAC Cosmetics senior exec}, created each new makeup brush with the purpose of control and flexibility.

While I absolutely love the look and thought behind these brushes, it did take me some time to get used to using them. I blame it on years of non-ergo dynamically designed brush use. Once I started to get the hang of using these brushes I was hooked. The makeup went on perfectly and my favorite is I don’t have to touch my face to put on eyeshadow anymore! Before I was balancing my hand on my cheek, trying to get the angles just right. Now the brush does all of the work, I just simply glide it where I want it to go.

The 5 piece Fluenta Collection brush set that was sent to me has the following brushes:

  • Oval 6 – great for applying foundation, blush, and contour
  • Oval 4Oval 3 – great for applying eye makeup with ease and perfection
  • Linear 1 – great for applying eyeliner and precision eye shadow. Also good for brow shaping
  • Circle 1 – great for applying lip color and concealer to small areas

The brushes themselves do not shed (!!!!) which is the biggest thing for me. I hate, hate, hate, trying to pick individual hairs off of my face. The design is modern and sleek and I love the ‘chrome’ finish on the matte black microtextured grip section. The brushes are weight-balanced – which is why I don’t need to use my face for balance or leverage.

You can find the Artis Fluenta Collection in-store at Neiman Marcus and NeimanMarcus.com. Prices range from $25 to $400, and there are many brushes available. The Oval 10 brush alone has over 250,000 individual fibers!

Perfume is one of those things a girl just has to have. I prefer fruity and tropical scents usually but recently had the chance to try something a little different. I received a bottle of Fiori di Capri fragrance and it was like none I have ever smelled before. It is described as a sophisticated yet delicate blend of Capri’s most precious floral essences.

When the bottle first came I sprayed myself down like I normally do. Normally I have to do this because the perfumes I am used to are light and the smells fade rather quickly. Fiori di Capri is not like my normal perfumes…

Carthusia Fiori di Capri Fragrance Review

I was quickly overwhelmed by a rush of fragrance and realized that 1 spray was plenty. It took a while for the smell to thin out, and I could still smell hints of the perfume days later.

Fiori di Capri was the first fragrance from Carthusia and is based on a legendary formula from 1380 when the scent was made for a queen. I don’t know how valid this is, but I swear I read somewhere that perfume was created to mask the smells of the unwashed. Bathing was more of a luxury than anything way back when and a monthly bath was the norm. This perfume reminds me of something that would have been used to mask smells, and perhaps that is why/how the original formula came to be.

The Fiori di Capri is kind of musky with strong floral tones woven throughout. the fragrance wears very well for hours and slowly fades as the day goes by. I have found that it dominates other smells so you will definitely be noticed when you are wearing it. The price tag sits around $80 which isn’t bad considering the quality of this perfume. It definitely isn’t your typical cheap/discount fragrance. A little goes a long way so the bottle will last you for a pretty good while.

You can buy Fiori di Capri from the Carthusia website or Amazon.com along with their other fragrances

Get a Healthy Tan at Home with Fake Bake

If you’ve tried self-tanning products at home then I’m sure you have some horror stories to tell. I know I’ve turned myself Oompa-Loompa orange more times than I’d like to remember. That doesn’t stop me from trying; otherwise, I’m blind you on the beach pale. The secret is finding the right formula for your skin and preparing your skin before applying. Skimp on these and you’re in for a week’s worth (or more) of unsightly hued skin.

If you browse at-home self-tanning product reviews and product pages you’ll find a lot of varying opinions. You’ll find contradicting advice and horror stories galore. I’m about to add to that, well except for the horror story part – I got lucky on this one!

I have been experimenting with at-home self-tanning product  for years, heck I’ll admit it – decades! Thanks to a family history of melanoma and my skin’s tendency to burn instead of tan, self-tanning is the safest choice for me. Most of the time the products have a disgusting smell and leave streaky bits of unnatural color. The one brand I have had the most luck with over the years is Fake Bake (who provided some great products for me to try out).

Fake Bake boasts an extensive fan list that includes Olivia Culpo, Ruby Rose, Demi Lovato, Rumer Willis, Whitney Carson, Karina Smirnoff and more.

The brand has been featured at Hollywood events such as the EMMYS, Teen Choice Awards, and the BELLA New York White Party in The Hamptons honoring the cover woman and Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Lisa Vanderpump.

Fake Bake has been around for a while and over the years, they’ve made some major improvements. The key thing I think is the smell. Each of the products I tried actually smells good, not chemically or foul. There’s a tropical scent that is stronger in some and more faint in others. Here’s a rundown of the Fake Bake products I tried.

Fake Bake Review

Amplify uses cutting-edge technology to create a triple threat. Amplify is known for its ability to boost, intensify and perfect your skin. The lotion is made up of an active plant-based agent that increases the skin’s melanin production. This means your skin will tan quicker, deeper and last longer.

Fake Bake Amplify

This product is slightly misleading, since it is meant to enhance your natural tanning process. It does add a slight tint when used alone and without outside tanning, but I’m thinking it would work best for beach days when you want to amp up your tan.

Tanning Body Butter for Dry Skin is made up of the highest grade botanical Shea Butter that will moisturize as it melts over the skin’s surface. There are natural antioxidants that fight free radicals in this body butter, all while gaining that healthy-looking addition of color.

Fake Bake Tanning Body Butter for Dry Skin

This was perfect for me since I have extremely dry skin. It immediately added moisture and made my skin look better. This is a lot thicker than the other products so a little goes a long way.

Doubleshot Espresso Tan Gel is the self-tanning product to use if you want a deep, golden bronze. It is made with several tanning actives for maximum depth of color.

Fake Bake Doubleshot Espresso Tan Gel

The gel formula glides on smoothly and dries fast. Doubleshot is highly concentrated so you only need a little bit to get a gorgeous tan.

Flawless Coconut Tanning Serum is designed with a triple tan formula to not only give you a golden bronze color but to enhance the beauty of your skin. It adds a healthy glow so you’re skin doesn’t look dull and the color is rich and very natural looking.

Fake Bake Flawless Coconut Tanning Serum

While I love the color, this does have a slightly off-putting smell. I thought it would be less smelly than other self-tanning products, especially since it’s coconut scented. The self-tanning smell seems to push past the coconut aroma though, making this the only Fake Bake product I don’t like the smell of.

Fake Bake can be found at Ulta Beauty, Bed Bath and Beyond and online at http://www.fakebake.com. The products I tried each (with the exception of Amplify) had color guides to help you see where you’ve applied the tanning product.

There was no streaking or yucky orange to come from any of these which makes Fake Bake my preferred at-home self-tanning product. That’s why I can confidently suggest you try it too!

Tips for using at-home self-tanning products

Tips for using at-home self tanning products

If you want to make the most of your at-home self-tanning experience here are a few tips/pointers.

  • Exfoliate beforehand. Having smooth skin will help make sure you stay streak free.
  • Use gloves. This is super important; no one wants carrot orange knuckles and palms – they just look dirty.
  • Be thorough. It helps to use a mirror but it isn’t necessary. Just be sure you’re covering all of the visible spots you want to be tanned. Imagine a tan face with pale white ears or neck. Yea – be thorough!
  • Take your time. It’s tempting to get dressed soon after the self-tanning product  dries, but don’t. Plan for at least an hour before getting dressed, this helps make sure the product doesn’t rub off on your clothes or streak before it’s completely absorbed.
  • Find the product that works for you. Do your research, find reviews from people with the same complexion/skin type as you. Even though I don’t always do it, I highly recommend doing a skin test before committing to a product. This will help keep you from turning orange or breaking out.

NYC New York Color HD Automatic Eyeliner Review

I think I was 8 the very first time I wore eyeliner. I don’t know how it was for you, but this was the late 80’s and I was always so amazed watching my mom put hers on. I would watch her do her makeup, always begging “Me next, me next!” My pleas were always met with “Maybe when you’re older.” and you know how kids are…

I snuck into the bathroom late one night and found her makeup bag. I wasn’t concerned with everything else, I just wanted my eyes to pop like my moms did. Back then she used an eyeliner pencil with a hard tip. Hard to the point she had to use a lighter to soften it. Do you see where I’m going with this?

I think I was 15 the next time I tried eyeliner. Thankfully I had a pretty good idea of what I was doing by then and I have been addicted to eyeliner ever since. When I was given the chance to try the NYC New York Color HD Automatic Eyeliner I jumped on it. There are five shades available: BLACK, NAVY BLUE, DEEP BROWN, TURQUOISE,  DEEP PURPLE. I tried the last three. Here’s what I found.

The Application

Thankfully there was no fire needed to apply these eyeliners. The smooth, near creamy liner glides on with good pigmentation on a single swipe. There’s no need to sharpen the eyeliner; just twist the base and watch it magically grow ;).

With this eyeliner you can go for a thin, low-key look or a sultry, smoky eye look. There is a smudger attached to the end which lets you blend the liner out.

The liner claims to offer a perfectly smooth formula, giving you coverage that never pulls or flakes. I can confirm these claims; I haven’t experienced any pulling or flaking with any of the liners.

The Wear

This liner also claims to be waterproof. I have tested it through crying, showering, and swimming. It does not come off with water alone. Prolonged water exposure (like swimming for hours) does seem to compromise the integrity and allow for smudging.

A quick – average length shower, brief rain encounter, or fit of laughter (laughing til you cry) are no match for this eyeliner.

The eyeliner seems to have a healthy lifespan of about five hours. After that it starts to fade away a little. If I’m going to be out longer than that I make sure to keep the liner in my bag for touch-ups.

The Miscellaneous

I hate the packaging. It comes wrapped in plastic that I had a time getting off. I broke a fingernail in the process.

It can actually be a pain to get off, eye makeup remover makes this easier.

These are super affordable at $2.00 per liner. I’m kind of glad there aren’t more colors because I would totally buy them all.

The Verdict

For $2.00 I couldn’t ask for anything more. The colors are rich and vibrant and the staying power is more than I would expect for the price. I’m loving the liners and can give them 2 thumbs up without hesitation.
